Marriage in Islam is described by the Prophet ﷺ as completing half of one's religious devotion. It is an emotional sanctuary, a partnership in faith, and the bedrock of compassionate families built upon love (Mawaddah) and mercy (Rahmah).
1. The Gold Standard Du'a of the Righteous
In Surah Al-Furqan, Allah describes the traits of the Ibad ur-Rahman (Servants of the Most Merciful). Their daily supplication for their current or future family is legendary:
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا
Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqeena imama.
"Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous."
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:74)The term "Qurrata A'yun" in Arabic literally translates to "coolness of the eyes"—describing a joy so profound and reassuring that it cools the burning warmth of grief and anxiety.
2. Prophet Musa's Prayer in Solitude and Need
When Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) escaped Pharaoh's tyranny and reached the wells of Madyan—homeless, alone, and without livelihood—he helped two young women water their flock, then retreated under the shade of a tree and made this sincere, vulnerable prayer:
«رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ»
"My Lord, indeed I am in dire need of whatever good You bestow upon me."
— Surah Al-Qasas (28:24)
Scholars note that immediately following this prayer, Allah provided Musa with honorable employment, a righteous father-in-law (Prophet Shu'ayb), and a pious, blessed wife.
3. What Qualities to Prioritize in Du'a
When supplicating for a partner, align your prayers with the advice of our Prophet ﷺ:
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So strive to marry the one who is religious, that your hands may be blessed." (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Pray not just for outward attraction, but for a companion who will remind you of Allah, stand beside you in Tahajjud, and nurture a household grounded in gentleness and Taqwa.
