In the Islamic worldview, the status of parents is elevated to a degree matched by no other human relationship. In numerous verses of the Holy Qur'an, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala pairs devotion to Himself directly with kindness to parents (Birr al-Walidayn).
1. The Quranic Prayers Taught by Allah
Allah Himself placed the perfect words on the tongue of believers in Surah Al-Isra, reminding us of the tender vulnerability of our childhood:
رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani sagheera.
"My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy even as they cherished and reared me when I was small."
(Surah Al-Isra 17:24)And Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) taught us to encompass our parents in our vision of the Day of Judgment:
«رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ»
"Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
— Surah Ibrahim (14:41)
2. Raising Their Degrees in the Grave and Jannah
When our parents pass into the realm of the Barzakh, their own ability to perform new deeds ends. Yet the love and prayers of a dutiful son or daughter pierce across realms.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated a heart-stirring reality:
«إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَتُرْفَعُ دَرَجَتُهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَيَقُولُ: أَنَّى لِي هَذَا؟ فَيُقَالُ: بِاسْتِغْفَارِ وَلَدِكَ لَكَ»
"A man's status will indeed be raised in Paradise, so he will ask: 'Where did this come from for me?' It will be said: 'By virtue of your child seeking forgiveness for you.'"
— Sunan Ibn Majah (3660), Hasan
3. The Triple Sadaqah Jariyah
In the famous hadith in Sahih Muslim (1631), the Prophet ﷺ declared that when a human passes away, all deeds terminate except three: a running charity, beneficial knowledge left behind, or a righteous child who prays for them.
Dedicate daily moments after each Fard prayer, arrange Quran completions (Khatm), and contribute continuous charity in their blessed name. This is the true legacy of love.
